BD Assignment #3 - Listening to Middle Eastern Music

Your assignment this week is really simple: Listen to Middle Eastern music.

I'm not going to give you a lecture about how Middle Eastern music is different than American and European style music, give you a history of styles and sub-genres, or tell you what is appropriate to dance to in certain settings. I'm not even going to get into the different musical instruments, how M.E. rhythms work, or tell you how to dance to certain sounds... yet. ;-)

Nope. All I want you to do is listen to the music.

Check out the following YouTube playlist (you may recognize it from here).

Click on the upper left icon to access the list of songs

You'll find a variety of styles and genres in this list. And your assignment is as follows:

--> Click through the list and listen with intent to various songs

--> Put the list on in the background (whenever possible) and go about your day (while getting cleaned up, in the car, while preparing your dinner, or doing whatever) and just let it soak in

--> At the end of the week, sit down and listen with intent again, sample the songs and pick a few you really like and share your choices with the group

Enjoy!

P.S After you've finished this assignment, feel free to check out the following links if you are wanting to learn about the history, music theory, or cultural dos and don'ts of Middle Eastern music.
